Text by Karlyn Louise Risher Composer's Notes. The text for this piece was the winning poem of the RealNewMusic poetry competition 2010, written by Karlyn Louise Risher. This piece was conceived as a duet for two instruments â“ the oboe and soprano voice. As such, I maintained a fair amount of equality between both parts - each performer has an equally important role in portraying the message of the text. Harmonically, the piece is based around several modal scales, interchanging and mixing them as needed. I sought to paint the text as frequently as possible. this will be evident with words such as "gasping," "swelling," and "up. " The concept of writing a piece using a contest-winning poem was fascinating. It was also interesting to see how my composition would be stretched as I was limited to writing the piece for my own instrument. oboe. and soprano.
