Herman Groenewegen’s 24 preludes are meant as a homage to Frédéric Chopin. A prelude is an introductory instrumental composition with no fixed form. It probably originated as a sort of improvisation played before a larger piece, for warming up, or to display virtuosity as well as for tuning purposes. In the seventeenth century the prelude took its place as the first piece in a suite. a series of dances. or before a fugue. a musical form in which multiple voices and different repetitions play a central role. During the Romantic era - an art movement at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century - the prelude developed into an independent and full musical form in its own right and became an unmissable form in the world of classical music.
