This sophisticated carol is a jewel of a setting. Over a rich accompaniment of strings set at 16' and 4' pitches, the sinuous melodic lines weave a spell to the listener. While a developed ear is needed to be sensitive to the many accidentals, the vocal range is moderate, allowing concentration on the text. The refrain "Lullaby, sweet babe sang she", is given a rising intense musical line that is most effective. This unusually effective work would make a spellbinding carol for the Christmas season.
