The piece flows along gradually building up to climax in the 5th verse. After this climax the accompaniment dies back down to being very minimal, gentle and ringing like beautiful bells for the final verse, this is then followed by a very soft and delicate instrumental to finish the piece. The goal with this arrangement was to write a stunning piano accompaniment to complement the stunning lyrics of The Water Is Wide. Oh Waly, Waly. as a lot of the time, the piano accompaniment seems to be neglected. Also, this piece is in the key of D major, and has a key change into E major leading into the climax.
